Honoring The Legacy of Chris "MackDaddy" Kelly: A Totally Krossed Out 90's Hip-Hop Icon

On Behalf of TheWellVersed, we send our deepest regard for the loss of one of the Koolest Hip-Hop Cats that taught us how to really “Jump” and look totally Kool with our slacks, tees, and jerseys turned to the back. Chris “MackDaddy” Kelly passed away last Wednesday, May 1 from a drug overdose in Atlanta, Georgia. He was only 34 years old.

To take a trip back down memory lane I want to share my first time seeing the video for the known world-wide jam “Jump” that put both Chris “MackDaddy” Kelly and Chris “DaddyMack” Smith on the map as Hip-Hop’s teen youth in the early to mid 1990′s.

It was my first relatable account of contemporary Urban music that stuck with me. One day I remember I was channeling surfuring and the video was playing. “I Missed The Bus” was another top single from “Totally Krossed Out” that I saw as a video. At that time music wasn’t big for me but in a time where MTV played mostly rock music and New Kids On The Block was the pop-sensation, Kriss Kross represented “Urban Rhythm” & Hip-Hop. That resonated with me experiencing a catapulting genre while viewing young people that looked just like me.

The duo was making a comeback performing for So So Def’s 20th Anniversary All Star Concert February 23, 2013, where they performed their hit “Jump” and their other top singles, “Warm It Up” and “Live and Die For Hip-Hop”. Just awesome and their performance shows they were born to be performers with a set entirely their own. We will surely miss him but will always remember his contribution to the world of music with his partner in crime Chris “DaddyMack” Smith.

Forever in our hearts and memories <3
