[The Tens] Midseason Awards - The 10 Most Disappointing Hip Hop Albums/Mixtape Of The 1st Half 2012

First things first, a disappointing album doesn’t always mean that it was awful and unlistenable. What it does mean is that it didn’t live up to expectations. In the case of some of those that made the list (Big K.R.I.T. and Stalley), their previous work trumped their 2012 project and we simply expected more. In others, the album had high expectations by the masses and just flopped artistically. TheWellVersed combed through a plethora of releases from the first half of 2012 (January 1 – June 30) and came up with these projects that left us a bit underwhelmed.

Stalley – Savage Journey To The American Dream

Coming off of Lincoln Way Nights, the expectations were heightened for Stalley’s first mixtape under the Maybach Music Group umbrella. The first thing most noticed was that Rashad was missing from the production credits. Without that brilliant production behind him, Stalley’s flaws crop up throughout the album. It’s certainly not bad, but he struggles to make some concepts come to life, as evidenced on “Seen It All.” The Chad Hugo produced “Everything New” feels too much like another “Mr. Me Too” and the MMG presence feels understated. We still believe he can be great, just not yet.

the Jadakiss mixtape, as plainly displayed on the album cover itself, is entitled the CoNsignment, not the Cosignment.

I’ll have to strongly disagree with your decision of including Strange Clouds on this list. B.o.B has always made poppy music for radio but he still delivers in those songs. It works for him. A lot of people would say that this album actually exceeded their expectations. But I agree with the rest of the post. Good shit!

Dead on with all these reviews. K.R.I.T. album DEFINITELY felt like I heard it before. Odd Future was only a matter of time before their 15 minutes was up. Waka still has a shot at it again because he’s so damn charismatic but he’ll either have to start being more deliberate with his concepts and raps instead of giving us a buffet of crunk or have Lil Jon executive produce his next one.

The Whole MMG campaign and movement is and will continue be based off more HYPE and FLAIR than substance which is sad because all them niggas can actually RAP! B.O.B. I thought was REACHING with his last one but got away with it. This one he wasn’t so lucky :) Stalley will never fit the MMG mold (Nipsey Hussle was a better fit) and Diggy will forever remain a gimmick as long as he stays in the majors.
