[Interview] Sex Week: Belladonna - Life, Love and Sex (Pt 2)
TWV: I love the “how to eat a popsicle like a pornstar” youtube video you made
Do people really assume that everything you do in everyday life is sexualized?
Bella: I think a huge amount of people out there do. Or they don’t want to think there’s anything else but that about me. Those are the fans that don’t want to hear about my personal life at all. So yes, there are definitely those people out there.
TWV: You’ve been pretty vocal about advocating safe sex. How do you feel about city ordinance requiring porn actors to wear condoms while performing?
Bella: There’s nothing wrong with people wearing condoms – I myself don’t enjoy the feeling of condoms…and as much as I would love to have condoms mandatory in my movies…time and time again people have shown that they don’t want to watch people have sex with condoms. Most people, at least.
TWV: So do you agree or disagree with the ordinance?
Bella: I don’t agree with it in a way because I think people should make their own choices when it comes to sex. There’s a part of me that feels like maybe there are a lot of performers who would rather wear a condom but they weren’t given that option. And so that part of me feels good {about the ordinance}. I want them to feel more safe. But at the end of the day I’d rather people had a choice. My personal choice is when I have sex is to get a brand new test from the person I’m working with, the day before we have sex, and make sure {the test includes} HIV RNA. Everyone who works for my company has to have that test now.
{author’s note: RNA testing detects HIV at an earlier stage than standard antibody testing, making for more reliable results}
TWV: Do you think the industry might move to nearby Las Vegas to avoid dealing with the ordinance?
Bella: Well the ordinance only applies to people using permits to shoot. So if people aren’t using a permit but don’t realize that the ordinance doesn’t apply to them – then sure, they might go to somewhere else like Vegas.
{Author’s note – Permits to shoot in Los Angeles are only required when filming at a sound stage, which is usually only done with very high budget films}
TWV: Why did you decide to create BelladonnaENT?
Bella: Honestly, I never really wanted to be a director. Maybe I had the desire to create scenarios; I’d tell Nacho ‘Oh! you should do this or that’ because he was a director. I had lots of creative ideas. But I never consciously thought I want to be a director, and own my own company – because I didn’t want that. But my ex-boyfriend thought I had such great ideas; he pushed me in that direction and I went.
It was really stressful for me when I started. I had all of these great ideas, but then I also had the responsibility of making a great movie – which was terrifying.
TWV: What Makes BelladonnaENT different than any of the other companies in the industry?
Bella: I can only speak from what I hear – I haven’t worked for any other company for years. But I feel like I am concerned about the safety and well-being of my performers. I want to give them a safe environment. I care about them feeling safe and knowing that the toilet seats are clean so they don’t get a staph infection, or that I sanitize the area they’re going to have sex in, and I give them clean toys. I can say that I care. And I don’t know if every single company out there does care about the people that work for them.
TWV: What do you look for in the talent you work with?
Bella: Well, I really try my best to find people who are genuinely interested in sex, and are interested in exploring their sexuality and are comfortable on camera. People who have the desire to create with me. As much as possible I try to find women with natural bodies, and women and men with great personalities.
TWV: What’s the best part of your job as a porn actress and director?
Bella: As an actress…there’s a lot of things I really like. I like…role-playing. I like role-playing in scenarios and making myself feel like that scene is really happening and focusing on nothing else but what’s going on in that moment. And I like pleasing. I really love watching people get pleasure – and being the one who is causing it.
As a director I like being able to call the shots and to create safe environments. Being able to not have to work every day helps. It helps me not get burnt out, which I have the tendency to do.
TWV: Even with all of the things you love about the industry — there’s still that ‘addiction to arousal’…so what are the chances of you disappearing on us again?
Bella: {laughs} I can’t tell the future, that’s for sure.
