[The Tens] No Love: The 10 Worst Breakups In Hip Hop

It may be Valentine’s Day, but love isn’t always in the air when it comes to the music industry. Some of the best relationships produce the finest music, but when things go wrong, they go really wrong. Which brings us to today’s edition of The Tens. TheWellVersed offers up ten of the worst breakups in hip hop.

1) Nas & Good Production

We’re not sure what happened between Nas and good production, but their fallout has been epic. Ever since Illmatic Nasir has struggled to form a union with a set of beats that come close to the magic he and the dream team of Pete Rock, The Ummah, DJ Premier, Large Professor and L.E.S. made. You can even see how it’s screwed with his mind. He chose to love Kelis instead and you see where that went.

2) Dr. Dre & Death Row Records

Suge Knight and Dr. Dre were a match made in heaven. But when Dre wanted out of the relationship, things went south. Suge has always acted like the abusive spouse and turned his wrath towards Dre for wanting to do his own thing. He turned his entire Death Row family (including the late Tupac) against Dre, but the damage was already done. Without his cash cow, Suge regressed. It was the best thing for Dre, not so good for Suge.

3) Ice Cube & His Jheri Curl NWA

We almost went the route of saying that Ice Cube losing the curl was like Samson losing his hair. But then we thought about how he pretty much ruined N.W.A. when he decided to end the one-sided relationship where Cube was sitting around broke while his Eazy E and Jerry Heller were going on dinner dates with the President. Not only did Cube get out of the relationship, he released what is considered one of the most venomous diss records ever “No Vaseline.” Somebody was getting f*cked, and it wasn’t going to be Cube.

4) Roc-A-Fella

This three way dance was a beautiful thing for Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke. But, just as in any relationship, someone figures out they are the breadwinner and things slowly fall apart. Things got worse when Dame tried to step out on Hov by naming Cam’ron Vice President of Roc-A-Fella while Jay was on “vacation.” Hov didn’t like that Dame had pretty much cheated on him and decided to break the union and struck out on his own. Biggs was left out in the cold and subsequently was caught up in a drug ring. Dame hasn’t been the same. As for the kids, Bleek stuck by Jay while Beanie Sigel turned into a scorned child with “daddy issues.” Jay-Z has moved on.

5) Yung Berg & His Chains

This is a sad case of a man who is constantly getting his “girl” snatched (literally). Yung Berg would get a new “girl,” but all the other guys viewed him as a wimp. This would lead to his “girls” getting snatched…constantly. It’s almost embarrassing. Actually, it is embarrassing. Especially when dudes take pictures with your “girl” and put it all over the internet.

6) Shyne & Diddy

Diddy is a user. Shyne was looking for someone to take him to the top. It was a match made in hell. What Shyne didn’t know was that he was the girlfriend that sounded like someone from Diddy’s past. But here was Shyne, ready to risk it all for Diddy. And when he did, what did Diddy do for Shyne? Gave him craptastic representation and watched him rot in a cellar for nearly a decade. What a wack relationship.

7) Game & Young Buck & G-Unit

This was almost like a polygamist relationship as 50 Cent had a solid foundation with G-Unit. But when a sister wife was brought in (Game), that foundation was shook. 50 felt as if he gave the young West Coaster an opportunity and all Game did was step all over him. Game didn’t really want to inherit 50′s beefs and that’s when things went south. Game was promptly booted from the relationship and the two traded diss records before things nearly got violent. But Game has moved on to forge his own relationships. Meanwhile, Young Buck made a fatal mistake by putting his family’s dirty laundry out in the open. Buck also got the boot and traded barbs with the G-Unit family. That was, until a phone call with Young Buck sobbing was released. Just an ugly relationship.

8 ) Superhead and Kat Stacks & Their Virginity

Talk about a couple of women scorned. The moment these two broke their hymen, it would be all hell for any man that came within an ear shot. Since parting ways with their virginity, these two have wrecked many men that are dumb enough to sleep with them. Karrine “Superhead” Steffans released a book while Kat Stacks took her relations with men to the web. If only we could have kept their relationship with their virginity intact.

9) A Tribe Called Quest

The end of this relationship was a heart breaker. Q-Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (and in the beginning, Jarobi) were pioneers that paved the way for innovative artists as they put intelligent rhymes over jazzy breaks. For eight years, Tribe was the apple of our eye. They made us fall in love with hip hop. But things were happening behind closed doors that the general public couldn’t see and the group shocked fans when they disbanded in 1998. It was painful for us fans, but the memories they left us will always be treasured. Wait, did they break up with each other or with us?

10) The Fugees

Oh, how we loved the Fugees. One of the greatest groups of all-time made beautiful music together. As a union, Pras, Wyclef and Lauryn Hill were more than exceptional. But separate is where Lauryn really shined. Apparently, things weren’t peaches and cream behind the scenes. When the group silently disbanded, rumors ranging from Lauryn and Wyclef’s intimate relationship to money problems surfaced. We don’t know what exactly happened. But we do know that Lauryn got with a Marley and went loony toons on us. Wyclef wanted to be president. And Pras…well…yeah.
