The Tens: 10 More Dope Female Rappers NOT Named Nicki Minaj To Watch In 2011

A couple of months ago we offered a list of ten female emcees not named Nicki Minaj who are just as good (if not better) than the Young Money rapper. But as we begin 2011, TheWellVersed brings you ten more female rappers who you should be paying attention to. Some of them you may have heard of, others may be new on your radar. Either way, we’ve also provided songs to get you familiar with their talents. Don’t say that we didn’t tell you.

What about Tennille? She fucks with underground cats like Pac Div and The Cool Kids and she’s got the whole singing/rapping thing like Lauryn had. DOPE.

OMG, Dessa is soo good. Its good to hear female rappers. I am very hard to please lyrically. I love sarcasm, wittiness and cleverness in lyrics. Nicki Minaj to me embodies the lyrical creativity that I crave. Dessa is very good and she loves Nicki. I knew there was something about Dessa that I liked lol.

Whilst surfing the internet one day I spied Rocky Rivera.
In my 30′s now, I grew up on some MC Lyte in “Self Destruction”, fast forward to the early nineties and Ladybug on Blowout Comb…then of course Lauryn Hill and Foxy Brown’s work on “It Was Written”…Call it too mainstream, but whenever there was a lull or “hip hop recession” the West Coast always seems to come in and perform CPR.
-Ice T, NWA, Pharcyde, Short Dog…. Whatever, I am long winded. This time it is totally Rocky Rivera.
Think about it, now everyone is sooo focused on punchlines, art imitating life…all these unwritten rules.
Rocky Rivera is pure, unadulterated, weed smoke blowing, multi-faceted good shit sorry.
This lady is one I wouldn’t want to battle on a real scale, because her foundation is verifiably supported by what looks to be an army of other completely bananas MC’s. I am from the Midwest….My pick is Rocky MF’n Rivera, and I gotta say, I-S-H ain’t never been a marshmallow. Thanks for reading.

Hazel thanks for your note. (LOVE The Sartorialist!!). All black is often the default colour because it’s the easier to unify (imagine an ensemble full of slightly different shades of red), it’s easy on the eyes, and the audience tends to focus more on the music than if the ensemble were wearing different colours. The problem with saying go for it, wear any colour is what one person considers stylish another will consider completely inappropriate. There there’s the issue of colour clashing. And in classical music, there are known stereotypes about what kind of dress is associated with certain types of music. Opera performers (and audiences) tend to go all out with style and flamboyance; Baroque performers (and audiences) tend not to consider fashion a big deal and are very low-key with their apparel. Ultimately, no, I don’t think ensembles should be able to wear any colour; then it looks like a rehearsal.
